The Channel of Peace Fraternity at St. Jude Parish in Chattanooga recently admitted
eight new members into the candidacy phase of the Secular Franciscans. With Franciscan
Father Evan Eckhoff are (from left, seated) Ellen Lennon, Rita Cooper, Karen
Griffiths, and Helen Weir and (standing) Joanne Ortner, Peggy Phares, Lori Arnseth,
and Sharon McCulloch. Candidates will now prepare for at least 18 more months
of classes on their journey to seek permanent profession as Secular Franciscans.
The Secular Franciscan order is the third order of the Franciscans. It is open
to lay men and women and diocesan clergy.
Chattanooga Deanery
Holy Spirit, Soddy-Daisy
- The parish’s May crowning will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May
5.
- A mother–daughter tea will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 11,
at the First Presbyterian Church of Soddy-Daisy.
- Women in the parish shawl ministry have given away 82 shawls to date,
and they have donated 154 knitted hats to Soddy-Daisy Head Start. The shawls
and hats required an estimated 3,288 hours of knitting. Barbara Garrison and
Mary Weaver will drive to Altoona, Pa., to present shawls to members of St.
Catherine of Siena Parish in thanksgiving for the support received from their parish.
St. Jude, Chattanooga
- Miriam Blanton, Niamh Cahill, Hannah Dearing, Katie Grann, Abby
Lester, Kendra Masterson, Joanna Mueller, Emily Ray, Annie Ripper, and
Hailey Shelby of Daisy
Troop 522 earned the Joyful Mysteries rosary patch. Their Scout leader is Michelle
Masterson.
- The God’s Quilts ministry has made and delivered 151 quilts since September.
Cotton fabric and quilt fillers are needed to continue the ministry. Drop off
items in the parish life center and mark them god’s quilts. Call

St. Mary, Athens
- Benedictine Father Martin DeMeulenaere will lead a parish retreat that begins
at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 25, and continues through Tuesday, April 27. Afternoon
sessions will be held at 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
- Araceli Salazar, Alejandra Hernandez, Blanca Rodriguez, Olga Mora,
Hydee Vazquez, Angelica Rubio, and Ester V. Brown attended the Movimiento Juan
XXIII retreat March 26 through 28 at St. Thérèse of Lisieux
Church in Cleveland.
St. Stephen, Chattanooga
- A man and a woman who live at Summit Home on Old Lee Highway need

Cumberland Mountain Deanery
All Saints, Knoxville
- The parish will present a fundraiser, M*A*S*H—Making All Saints Happen,
from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 1. The event is for adults ages 21 and older
and will include M*A*S*H-themed games, entertainment by the All Saints “Prime
Time Priest Players,” and silent and live auctions. “Inductees” attending
the event are encouraged to dress casually, in Army fatigues, or as their
favorite M*A*S*H character. Tickets: $17.50, with proceeds supporting parish
ministries.
Those unable to attend are welcome to donate cash or items to be auctioned.

Blessed Sacrament, Harriman
- Volunteers are needed to help provide prepared meals the second Wednesday
of each month for Pathways Community Shelter in Harriman. Monetary donations

- The rosary will be recited each Sunday at 10:10 a.m. before Mass throughout
the month of May.

- The parish Council of Catholic Women raised $6,267.04 from a recent

- Ruth Queen Smith presented a mini-retreat, Forty Days With Our Risen
Lord: From Resurrection to Pentecost, on April 13.
- A parish potluck supper was held April 4. The next parish social will
be a Mother’s Day dance from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 9, at the Fairfield
Glade Recreation Center. Cost: $10 per person; includes catered hors d’oeuvres.

Students from the formation class at Holy Cross Parish in Pigeon Forge celebrated
their first Communion on Holy Thursday, April 8. Father Jay Flaherty, pastor
of Holy Cross, explained the meaning of the sacraments of Communion and reconciliation
and reminded the children to receive them as often as possible in order to
stay close to God. The children were taught by catechists Tee Sipe and Ursula
Gifford with Huguette Cavalletto assisting. From left are (front row) Matthew

Holy Spirit Parish couples celebrating their anniversaries renew their vows
during Mass on Feb. 15 at First Presbyterian Church in Soddy-Daisy. Holy
Spirit pastor Father Mike Creson leads the parish’s annual ceremony,
also attended by friends members and family of the couples.

Youth in the first holy Communion class at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in

The Knoxville Catholic High School dance team placed second in the varsity hip-hop
division in competition against more than 15 squads in the Universal Dance Association’s
Smoky Mountain Spring Spectacular on March 13 at the Gatlinburg Convention Center.
Afterward, the squad stopped by St. Mary Church in Gatlinburg to say hello to
Father Philip Thoni, who holds the runner-up trophy. With the St. Mary pastor
